Baseball picks up non-conference win over Independence

Berkshire used aggressive baserunning and timely hitting to outlast Independence, earning an 8-6 win in a back-and-forth contest.

The Badgers jumped on the board early in the first inning. Sam Barcikoski led off with a single, moved into scoring position with his speed, and eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Patrick Brancel. Berkshire added two more in the inning, highlighted by Evan Pollock’s RBI knock, to take a 3-0 lead.

Independence battled back in the middle innings, capitalizing on a handful of errors to close the gap and eventually tie the game at 4-4 heading into the fifth.

That’s when Berkshire responded with its biggest offensive push of the day. In the bottom of the fifth, Barcikoski sparked the rally again by reaching base, and the Badgers followed with a string of clutch hits. P. Brancel delivered another RBI single, Bear Masink added an RBI hit of his own, and aggressive baserunning helped manufacture a third run of the inning to give Berkshire a 7-4 advantage.

Independence made one more push in the sixth, plating two runs to cut the lead to 7-6, but the Badgers answered once again. In the bottom half, the Badgers added an insurance run as P. Brancel got caught in a rundown, allowing Barcikoski to score from third to pushing the lead to 8-6.

On the mound, Aidan Andre set the tone early with several strikeouts before Holden Hedrick came on in relief to help navigate the later innings. The Berkshire defense made key plays down the stretch, including shutting the door in the seventh to secure the win.

At the plate, P. Brancel led the way with multiple hits and RBIs, while Masink and Pollock each contributed run-scoring hits. Barcikoski was a catalyst all game long, reaching base multiple times and using his speed to impact the game on the bases.
